Japan: There and Back
by Aina Riu (2026)

Graphic Novel / 17x24cm / 224 p. / offset quality print in 2 inks black+red and black+yellow / published in catalan by Pagès Editors 2026

“In her debut in the world of comics, Aina Riu invites us on a journey that goes much beyond the map. What was supposed to be a simple internship in an architecture studio in Japan is transformed into an intimate, sensitive and deeply human story.

Among silent streets, hidden temples and the hustle and bustle of everyday Japanese life, Aina traces an autobiographical fiction that is, at the same time, a mirror and a confession. A story that explores the doubts, learnings and invisible footprints that mark the steps of a life.

More than a travel diary, this book is a slit from top to bottom. An invitation to see Japan from her skin, to walk with her eyes and discover a country with a disarming honesty and a vibrant beauty.

A work that speaks of distance, identity and growth, and that turns a personal experience into a universal journey.”

Presentació del llibre Japó: viatge d'anada i tornada

The book was presented at the Documenta bookstore, in Barcelona, in April 2026.

It is my first work as a comic artist, where I link my last work as an architect with my own experience of moving abroad, in a fictional story based on real events.

One of the peculiarities of the book is that half of it is read from right to left, that is, in reverse, like the Japanese. The gesture aims to bring the reader closer to Japanese culture.

Book printing process at Pagès editors.
